Talbot House

In the Belgian town of Poperinge, only a few miles from the front line and within range of the German guns stood a shell damaged house. This house was to transform the lives of thousands of allied servicemen and later provide the inspiration for a charity which would touch millions of people around the globe. Like most great ideas, though, it started small. The story of Toc H began in 1915 when two army chaplains decided to open a club where any soldier, regardless of rank or background would be made welcome.

The Hallway

Like Alice stepping through the looking glass, entering the haven of Talbot House was to leave the hell of rat-infested trenches.

The Library

Tubby gave up his sitting room to create a quiet area, and created a library of sorts - a large cupboard crammed with books!

The Padre's Room

Tubby’s notice over his door saying “Abandon rank all ye who enter here” applied to the whole of Talbot House but especially in here.

The Chapel

With an old carpenter's bench for an alter, the Chapel was both comforting and powerful.

The Garden

A lawn, flowers, fruit trees and even chickens provided a little piece of Heaven
