The Garden
To men more used to the trenches, the garden at Talbot House must have seemed like a little piece of Heaven. There was a lawn, flowers, fruit trees against a sunny wall and even chickens scratching about.During the summer it was full of birdsong and the visiting soldiers took full advantage of this peaceful haven to recharge their batteries. Men slept in the sun, read or chatted quietly. Sometimes, a concert or a show provided a bit of extra entertainment. Even the occasional German shell failed to dampen their enthusiasm for this little green oasis.
