Fruitful City Garden

28 Mar 2007
A new community fruit garden was launched at the Toc H John Scurr Community Centre in March to celebrate the joys and benefits of community food growing.
The open day, organised by the Women';s Environmental Network (WEN) was attended by over 80 women living in the Tower Hamlets area. Clare Joy of WEN said: “This has been a wonderful opportunity to bring women together and also to celebrate growing food in unusual spaces.”
The symbolic planting of a mulberry tree marked the opening of the fruit garden which is situated on a small piece of land behind the John Scurr centre. Workshops included seed sowing, painting and decorating planters, junk art workshops and a fresh fruit smoothie bar, which proved extremely popular with the children.
A ‘Ready Steady Cook'; type challenge brought cheers from the ladies attending the event and was followed by a healthy lunch of delicious vegetarian Indian food.
Free seeds and compost, donated by East London Community Recycling Partnership Ltd (ELCRP) was given out so that the women could extend their planting experiences at home.
Anisah Islam, Toc H outreach worker said: “The garden project has already been very successful in bringing all members of the community together regardless of culture, religion, age or race.
