ROYAL RECOGNITION

10 Nov 2006
Their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall were the guests of honour at a Toc H Tea and Cake event in Jarrow, Newcastle on Wednesday.

Held in the home of Duncan Whittington, Toc H regional development officer, guests from different cultures and religions shared refreshments and conversation with the royal couple as part of their commitment to breaking down religious and cultural barriers.

Bede Burn Road, where Duncan lives, had been a hive of activity all day, with police, security, national and local media including BBC Television and local people milling around waiting for the royal arrival.

“The whole thing was quite surreal,” said Geoff Smith, Toc H chief executive. “There we were, a group of ordinary people sharing tea in a small terraced house, when in walked the royal couple.”

Eleanor Barlow, who had been busy baking cakes for the event and making tea, was delighted to receive a few words of thanks from both Charles and Camilla. “They were so lovely and I was very surprised at how down-to-earth they both are,” said Eleanor.
